London Down Syndrome Association Speech

On November 1st, I was the guest speaker at the London Down Syndrome Association dinner at the Hellenic Club. There were about 325 people there. There was a silent auction and a live auction and of course, a dinner. For dinner we had two kinds of meat, beef and chicken. At the end of the evening, there was a dance and I danced the whole time.

My speech was right after the dinner. It was about 15 minutes long. I told everyone all about my life and what I like to do. I tricked everyone and told them I was going to talk about what I could not do but they were just funny things like I can’t fly an airplane or I can’t play in the NHL. I had a slideshow and most of the pictures were things I do but some of them were photoshopped pictures of me doing the things I said I could not do.

I told everyone I could not play in the NHL.

But then I said I could probably play for Toronto. Them I told everyone about all the sports I do play.

This is one of the joke pictures. I told everyone I could not play backup for Adam Levine and Maroon 5 but then I told them I play guitar and I love it.

When I was doing my speech and I looked out at all the people, I was happy. I was a little bit nervous but I like speaking. At the end of my speech, I got a standing ovation.

  1. Hi Val,

Love reading your blog, so keep on writing! Your speech sounded most entertaining. Think you might have another work option – as a stand-up comedian 🙂

    Take care,

  2. Wish I could have been there to hear your speech Val. Sounds like everyone loved it! You look good in the Leaf shirt but you should be happy wearing it! LOL (and you are right, you COULD probably play for them!)

  3. Val, we were thrilled to have you as our guest speaker at this year’s 12th Annual Gala for the London Down Syndrome Association. Your speech was inspirational, funny and the pictures were the best. You are a wonderful example of a young woman living life to the fullest and you continue to inspire so many. Thank you again for being our inspiration and glad that you enjoyed dancing the night away!
Heartfelt thanks and continued success Val in all that you do! Bravo!
