I took some time off work and with my mom and dad and my dog, Merlin, we drove out west to visit my sister, Jackie and her boyfriend, Brian. That was Merlin’s first road trip.
First we drove up around Lake Superior here in Ontario. It is a long drive to get there but it is very pretty. We stopped at lots of places and looked at the scenery. There was a sandcastle on the beach and Merlin posed with it.
The we drove through Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The yellow canola fields and the blue flax fields are really nice. Those provinces are called the prairies. They are very flat.
Then we drove into Alberta. First we went to Calgary, where my sister lives. We went to the Calgary Stampede. It was really hot that day but we still had lots of fun.
The next day, we went to the Calgary Zoo. We saw lots of animals. My favourites were the Meerkats, the Snakes, the Bears and the Gorillas. There was a brown bear that was actually beige.
After a few days in Calgary, we went on to Canmore, where we had a condo for a week. Everywhere in the condo, we could see the mountains out the windows. My favourite mountains are The Three Sisters. After I saw them in February, I have been painting them. I bought a painting of the Three Sisters in downtown Canmore that an artist had done. Here is a picture of Three Sisters from the balcony in our condo.
While we in Canmore, we did lots of fun things. We took a gondola up to the top of Sulpher Mountain. From the top, we could see the town of Banff below us. We went to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. These lakes reminded me of the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. There are mountains all around them. But, the Blue Lagoon was warm and these lakes are cold. The colour of the water is like a bluey green. It is very beautiful. It is hard to say which lake I like better.
Which lake do you think is prettier?
We did lots of hiking in the mountains. One day, we saw a bunch of marmots playing. One of them was following my dad like a puppy. I don’t think Merlin liked that.
Another day my Dad and I went horseback riding in the mountains. My horse was called Caddie and my dad’s horse was Caddie’s son, Frosty. It was so beautiful riding in the mountains. I want to do that again another time when I am out there.
It was sad having to say goodbye to Jackie and Brian after our fun times out west. I hope I get to see them again soon.
